Matariki Street Market

Matariki Street Market
The goal of this project was to create the marketing material for a fictional street market in Wellington, New Zealand. The theme was based on the new public holiday of Matariki, and required me to create a poster and two more complimentary pieces of advertising. I needed to ensure that my marketing material conveyed my message to my target audience.
Māori culture & Matariki
My first task was to research the aspects of Māori culture relating to Matariki. My main focus of this was artwork, patterns, and the mythology of Matariki itself.
Target Audience
My target audience were the parents of families with young children. I wanted to appeal to the fact that this would take place over the long-weekend and would be a unique event which celebrated the unique culture of Māori. I needed my design to be simple and eye-catching.
Research of previous events
I begun to research other examples of marketing material for events relating to Matariki and anything which incorporated Māori or Pasifika culture into it.
Colour Palette
The colour palette I settled on consisted of these colours. I wanted to go for a heavenly body feeling in my design, and I felt these colours in combination matched this feeling.
Concepts
These were the initial concepts I came up with. Originally, I wanted to feature Wellington harbor to make my location very obvious for my target audience. I also wanted to feature the eye in the sky design to match my research on the mythology of Matariki. Feedback from my peers, led me to continue further with the 3rd concept which just featured the eye in the stars.
Final Concept
With feedback, I made my refinements to my design until I reached my final result on the right. I then incorporated this final project into my other marketing materials.
